According to new research released by the website HomeGain.com, when over 400 home sellers were surveyed who were selling their home during the period of July 31 to Aug. 10, 2012, they were asked whether they used a real estate agent to sell their home, or whether they attempted to sell it themselves – 79 percent said they used an agent, while 21 percent of those surveyed said they tried to sell their home on their own. The results? About 66 percent of homeowners who used the services of an agent managed to sell their home, while only 30 percent of those who attempted to sell their own properties were successful. Additionally, 22 percent of those who attempted to list properties on their own eventually sought the help of a real estate agent. Of those homeowners, 55 percent were eventually able to sell.
Additionally, findings from a new poll conducted by an online marketing solutions provider for real estate agents and consumers found home sellers fare 120% better in getting their home sold using a real estate agent than selling on their own. The number of FSBO (for sale by owner) sellers has declined in recent years. According to the National Association of Realtors, from 1991 to 2011 the share of home sellers who used a real estate agent or broker to sell their home increased from 77 percent to 87 percent. Over the same time period, the share of sellers who sold their home as a FSBO decreased from 19 percent to 10 percent. The typical FSBO home sold for $150,000 compared to $215,000 among agent-assisted home sales.
