Tampa’s Davis Islands (33606) is a very exclusive and sought after neighborhood with quite a history. Created from two man-made islands atop two swampy islands at the mouth of the Hillsborough River once known as Little Grassy Key and Big Grassy Key, Davis Islands was first established in the 1920’s by D.P. Davis, a developer who prospered during the Miami boom. Davis purchased the land right before the Florida Land Boom for a reported $350,000. It’s rumored that Bayshore Boulevard’s residents fought the development of the island for years, claiming that development was impossible on top of the swampy mudflats. Davis proved them all wrong, didn’t he? He dredged the islands and forged them together to create a resort with luxury hotels, a golf course, airport and expensive residential property. It’s said that on opening day in October 1924, all of the 300-plus prepared lots sold for more than $1.5 million.
Today, Davis Island homes for sale range from about $400,000 to over $6,000,000 for single family residences, with one of the more famous recent purchases being made by baseball player Derek Jeter, who’s home is currently estimated to be worth approximately $15,000,000.
The community has an active civic association and many residents have joined the Davis Island Yacht Club. At the tip of Davis Island there is open green space where you’ll find Peter O’ Knight airport, Davis Island Yacht club and two dog Parks, as well as a little “beach” for relaxing, including a fenced in dog beach. Tampa’s main hospital, Tampa General is located at the North tip of the Island.
