You’ve heard the saying – if its seems too good to be true, it probably is. You may have heard about the Craigslist Rental scam that’s been going on. It’s happening everywhere and I know several people who’ve been caught up in it. A scam artist posts pictures of a home on Craigslist for an extraordinarily low rental amount, and then asks that you either wire funds, send cash or even meet him with cash. Then, the keys never come. As a Realtor who sometimes carries rental listings, I’ve even experienced where a scammer used my photos of a home I previously had rented out and he re-posted them on Craigslist offering a much lower rental price. After calling the police, they said there was nothing I could really do about it.
The fact is, the rental market is hot right now and rent prices are rising due because many people have been foreclosed on and now require a rental to live in. Demand is outweighing supply. So if the price seems really low – be sure you are not being scammed. In some cases it makes better sense to buy a home for what rents are running currently.
